This jacket by Galliano (1960-) dates from the late 1980s, when he was designing his own label and perfecting his tailoring and romantic style. Always inspired by history, he graduated from the BA Womenswear course at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 1984. His collection, called ‘Les Incroyables’, was based on the idiosyncratic and exaggerated dress of young French men and women of the French Directoire in the 1790s. Reacting against the holocaust of the French Revolution, this look – exaggerated, sexual and often shocking in its modernity, had particular resonance with the London club and fashion scene, experimenting with androgyny and transgression. But Galliano made it beautiful, and this jacket, based on the eighteenth century ‘caraco’ jacket, with its tailored silhouette and flattering basques at the waist, is a development of ‘Les Incroyables’. In 1995, Galliano was appointed creative director of Givenchy and in 1996 he became creative director of Christian Dior.
